FUEL OIL

What is Fuel Oil ?

Fuel oil is a fraction produced during the distillation of petroleum, either as a residue or a distillate. In general, fuel oil is any liquid petroleum product that is used in an engine to produce power or is burned in a furnace or boiler to produce heat, with the exception of oils with flash points below 40 °C (104 °F) and those used in cotton- or wool-wick burners.

In a stricter meaning, the word “fuel oil” only refers to the heaviest commercial fuel that can be produced from crude oil, i.e., fuel that is heavier than gasoline and naphtha.

Six fuel oil requirements are identified by the ASTM classification system, which was initially based on early refining and combustion engineering processes and nomenclature. various definitions

Applications of Fuel Oil

  • It is used primarily for steam boilers in power plants, aboard ships, and in industrial plants. Commercial fuel oils usually are blended with other petroleum fractions to produce the desired viscosity and flash point.
